Result!

14th of February, 2014, Youtube's 9th birthday and St Valentine's Day. As well as the usual stack of cards from various admirers and hopefuls this year I also got a large white envelope from DEFRA. I've mentioned a couple of times that my bees were in the European Union Pilot Surveillance Programme for honey bee health. This European Commission driven study included 200 beekeepers in England and Wales of which I was one. The Regional Bee Inspector visited each beekeeper in the study three times, twice in 2012 and once in 2013. As well as a visual inspection he took samples of bees from each hive which were then taken off to the Bee Unit for analysis, specifically TaqMan® Molecular Pathogen Screening. Yeah it's not exactly an olde worlde beekeeping technique ;) From what I can gather it involves searching for the DNA of specific viruses in a sample using DNA Probes. It sounds a little Fantastic Voyage to me, but you can always read up on Polymerase Chain Reaction yourself if you're having a slow week.

In the first visits samples were taken from all three hives, in the second samples were taken from Hive1 and a sample of dead bees from the deceased Hive3. In the third visit a sample was taken from Hive1 which the inspector felt showed some signs of varoosis. The first samples also had varroa counts lab checked too.

The molecular screening checked for Deformed Wing Virus, Nosema Apis, Nosema Carnae, Acute Bee Paralysis Virus, Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus, Kashmir Bee Virus and Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus. The names of some of these viruses hints at how far across the globe they've spread, that's mainly thanks to people of course.

Hive3 had died out overwintering between the first and second visits, and Hive2 wasn't sampled in the second and third visits because there were no visible signs of disease. Hive 1 was only tested as it had shown visual signs of varoosis. When I gave the bees their Oxalyc Acid treatment in late November Hive2 was the most populous.

Last weekend I had a listen to the hives with a stethoscope just to see if the bees were surviving. Hives 1 and 2 seemed to be doing well but Hive3 which contained the captured swarm was a lot quieter. Using a stick I had a poke around in the entrances to make sure they weren't blocked with dead bees.

An Inspector Calls Again

Warmer weather at last, bees are flying and in the pond frogs are doing unspeakable things to each other. Yesterday, marking what may at last be the start of the beekeeping season I gave both hives a contact feeder full of 1:1 syrup.

I actually had 2 litres of 2:1 (2kg sugar:1 litre water) syrup that'd been left over from last year. Rather than binning it I'd put it in a bottle and left it in the freezer for a few months. After defrosting it in the fridge I added 1.5 litres of hot water , it won't be exactly 1:1 syrup but I think it will be pretty close. I stirred it a long time and then with a few ml of Vitafeed Gold poured it into the feeders and placed them over the feeding holes. I could see there was still some fondant on the top bars but I left it there for the time being, I didn't open the hives at the time as I wanted to minimise disruption to the bee plus I was planning to do that today because..

Today was my second of three visits from the Regional Bee Inspector as part of the European Union Pilot Surveillance Programme for honey bee health. The previous inspector had changed roles and I gather is still working with bees but in a microscopy type role now and his position hasn't been filled yet (job vacancy there for someone who knows their bees and bee diseases) so today's Inspector, a chap with 45 years beekeeping experience, had been drafted in from another region.

The visit started off with a discussion of changes in my apiary, colonies added, sold, lost, merged and split. The only change to mine was the loss of one colony in the nucleus. There was a few questions about what I've been doing with my bees since last inspection too such as any treatments, I'd given them one treatment with Oxalic Acid back in January which was duly noted. He mentioned about heavy bee losses all over the UK particularly Scotland this year and how the past few years weather has been very different from that of previous decades. This time last year my hives has been teeming and I was removing drone brood to control varroa. The strange weather this year has meant the colonies are about 5 weeks behind their normal spring buildup. Next we went outside to meet the bees.


During the previous visit in September samples were taken from all three hives, in this visit samples were only being taken from hives showing signs of disease. I felt Hive1 may be a little touch and go as numbers were far lower than Hive2 so the inspector suggest we start with Hive2 to avoid transferring across any disease that might've been present in Hive1. With the crownboard off the inspector quickly located the Queen and some existing capped honey remaining. I like tot think the presence of capped honey meant I got things right preparing the hives for winter, it also explains why they hadn't paid much attention to the fondant and told me that the fondant on top of the frames wasn't necessary. We scraped of the existing fondant, I noticed a few bees had actually been trapped in the fondant when I'd placed the crownboard over it so I'll have to take a little more care next time -maybe smoke the bees down into the box more than I did. There were some eggs visible so she'd only started laying within the past 3 days. One frame had a small number capped brood on it, they weren't particularly well grouped. So she'd started laying on a previous warm day but stopped again. He felt this might indicate she wasn't mated well and may need replacing. I'll have to watch how she does as laying progresses.

Hive1 was less populous than 2, as I'd expected. There were a few eggs but the pattern better than in 2, the Inspector felt that despite there being less bees in Hive1 she may actually turn out to be the better queen. In this hive he spotted a few larvae who weren't quite correctly adhering to the vertical cell wall and had slumped a little. Segmenting of the body was still visible but did look a little relaxed. Out came a matchstick. The test for Foul Brood is to dip a matchstick into the dead larvae and pull it out, if it has Foul Brood the contents will stick to the stick and the cell contents forming a rope of slime. That didn't happen with these so no foul brood. I wonder if perhaps they're in early stages of a little sac brood, going to be a case of watchful waiting there really. I removed the fondant from this hive too.

He'd also spotted pollen being brought into both hives and no obvious signs of bee diseases in either. Given the high mortality rate in Hive1 I'd saved a jar of the dead bees in the freezer which he took. Looking at the jar he said he could see a black, hairless, shiny bee in the jar -that'd point the finger at Chronic Bee Paralysis Virus (CBPV), although there'd been no visible signs of it amongst the living bees. CBPV affects honey bees all over the world and is endemic in the UK. Normally present to some degree in most colonies it only seems to become a significant problem when the bees are crowded and unable to forage such as has been the case with the long winter. There is no treatment for CBPV but as they're no longer crowded, now foraging and I've pulled out the dead perhaps the colony will work through it if it hasn't already.

He had a quick look a the dead nucleus, I'd already pulled out most of the dead though there were a couple with their heads still in the cells. He concurred with my thought that the white mould visible on the comb had grown after the bees died too. There was still capped honey on the frames which the bees hadn't eaten having refused to break their cluster to get it. Whilst it certainly looks like they'ed starved he took the sample of dead bees from here that I'd frozen for testing in case there was anything more sinister at work.

I'll check BeeBase at a later date to see if examination of the dead bees yielded anything unusual, but so far it seems there's nothing too major to worry about. No obvious signs of diseases, eggs being laid in both hives, pollen being brought in and capped honey still present in both hives, no varroa mites spotted. He felt Hive1 would build up rather well assuming the weather doesn't do something unexpected. Just need to keep an eye on the brood pattern in Hive2 and consider replacing her if she doesn't get her act together.

An Inspector Calls

Back in June I got a letter from the National Bee Unit. No they heven't been reading my blog, it was an invitation to participate in the European Union Pilot Surveillance Programme for honey bee health. I was one of 200 beekeepers in England and Wales selected to participate at random from the BeeBase database. I don't know how many bee keepers are in the database but bearing in mind my ID number is 42501 I'd assume there's quite a few.

The study is being done by the European Commission and intends to accurately identify risk factors associated with colony losses across the 17 participating meber states. As a new beekeeper I'm quite probably one those of those risk factors.. Participants in the programme are to be visited three times by a Bee Inspector (yes there really is such a job), once in Autumn 2012, again in Spring 2013 and finally in Summer 2013. Initially the Inspector will take away 300 bees from each colony and if any disease is found during the inspection further samples of symptomatic bees and larvae are to be taken as well as any unusual beetles or mites observed in the hive. So I need to look inside my colonies and pick out my 300 least favourite bees. If you want to know more about it the Programme guidelines are online in a 34 page PDF file.  I was happy to agree to be part of the pilot programme because it's hopefully going to be a useful piece of data gathering and also because a visit from a Bee Inspector is a good way to get some pointers on what you're doing right or wrong. Plus a seasoned eye looking over the colonies may even spot some things I've missed.

The Inspector phoned me to arrange a time and date for the visit.I picked 3pm on Saturday 8th September having forgotten that was the Hull Freedom Festival -gotta start writing things down. He turned up pretty much bang on time and started with an explanation of what the pilot is for. Basically it's to try and work out why bees are dying off by keeping tack of survival rates and beekeeping practices. We went through a questionnaire about the bees. Questions about how long I' had my bees, where do I keep them and so on, had I introduced any imported Queens or swarms this year, had I collected any swarms, was I using any chemical treatments, any incidents of unusually high bee mortality, what kind of bee were they, what other insects have I found in the hives and a few other things.

After this is was time to run though the hives and gather some bees. The Inspector carried his tools in a rectangular plastic bucket in a bleach solution to avoid spreading disease between apriaries. He used a different type of hive tool to me, mine's a standard hive tool whereas his was a a flat "J" type tool. It's called that because it has a "J" shaped hook at one end for levering frames out. It certainly appeared to do a better job of levering out frames from my nucleus which is a little tight than my standard hive tool and frame grip combination so I may invest in one at some point.

I lit my smoker and puffed some cardboard and corn cob husk smoke towards the front of the hive to let the bees know we were coming. Didn't actually use the smoker again after that. It seems the less smoke the better really.

The first thing he did was collect a few dead bees from the ground in front of the hives. There weren't a great deal of them though and it's not particularly easy to acces the ground in front of the hives really so he said he might not have been able to gather a useful sample of these.

We started with the nucleus. He observed the queen is still laying and the bees appeared healthy. He managed to locate the queen whom I've never actually managed to find before. She was grown from a supercedure cell from Hive2 where the queen is a long creature with a slightly reddish abdomen but this queen was, I felt, relatively small as queens go and the exact same colouring as the rest of the bees. Despite looking a little small she's still laying really well so I gues the rule of thumb about fat queens being betterisn't a hard and fast one. The Inspector lined a nucleus he'd brought with a bin liner and shook all the bees from one frame into it. He then put samples of these bees into small plastic containers containing a transparent  liquid. Yep they died but it's for the greater good of the species afterall. The big bag was then emptied of the rest of bees over the nuc and shaken out at the front to get any last bees out.

Next up was Hive1. I think of these as being more aggressive than the other 2 colonies but with minimal smoke they were very manageable. Once again the inspector found the queen and shook out a frame (without her on it) into another bin liner and took more samples. Once again no problems were found with the colony. Plenty of brood were developing still and the supers were heavy with honey.

Last up was Hive2. The hive I'd found sacbrood in previously. In my next inspection after spotting this I'd tweezered out all the sacbrood infected larvae I'd been able to spot. I saw a couple of larvae with sacbrood the inspection after that and I pulled those out too. On this inspection we didn't see any sacbrood at all so I think the bees have managed to get on top of it as I'd hoped. The queen of Hive2 is the only queen I regularly spot, she doesn't seem shy and has often been happy to loiter about on a frame as I take a photo or two.  However she must've been in a bit of a royal strop today as we didn't see her at all. As we couldn't find the queen the Inspector took Hive2's sample from the bees on a shallow frame in the super. Once again the bees and brood looked jolly healthy and brood pattern appeared normal too.

The short term benefit for myself as a participant is that bees from each of my colonies are being screened for diseases free of charge. There'll be a two more visits and set of samples taken next year which will also be analysed and at some point I'll be able to see results from the analysis on the BeeBase website. For the bigger picture my techniques (importing bees or not, use of chemicals etc etc), the health of my bees and overwinter survival rates will be collated along with the same information gathered from a total of 3,571 apiaries across Europe.
